There is și there are: cum spui că ceva există

În română spui „este o carte pe masă" sau „sunt două pisici în grădină" fără să te gândești. În engleză trebuie să alegi între there is și there are - iar confuzia cu it is e una din cele mai frecvente greșeli la nivel A1.

Regula scurtă: there is / there are spune că ceva există sau se află undeva. There is pentru un singur lucru, there are pentru mai multe. În română se traduce prin „este / sunt / se află".

There is a book on the table. There are two cats in the garden.

Când se folosește there is și când there are?

	there is (singular)	there are (plural)
Afirmativ	There is a book on the table.	There are three books here.
Negativ	There isn't a car in the garage.	There aren't any chairs.
Interogativ	Is there a bank near here?	Are there any shops?
Răspuns scurt	Yes, there is. / No, there isn't.	Yes, there are. / No, there aren't.

Cum se face acordul când ai mai multe substantive?

Regula acordului: alegi is sau are după substantivul care urmează imediat, nu după toată lista.

There is a table and four chairs.

După table, singular → there is
There are four chairs and a table.

După chairs, plural → there are

Some, any

Când folosești a, some sau any cu there is/are?

Da. În vorbire, there is devine there's. There are nu are formă scurtă standard.

Care e diferența dintre there is și it is?

Nu le confunda. There is introduce ceva nou, spune că există. It is se referă la ceva deja cunoscut sau descrie.

Mai multe lucruri cer there are.

Acordul se face cu substantivul care urmează imediat (table, singular).

Have a shop near here? → Is there a shop near here?

Existența unui loc se exprimă cu is there, nu cu have.

Se spune „there is" sau „there are" cu substantive nenumărabile?

Cu substantive nenumărabile se folosește there is, pentru că sunt tratate ca singular: There is some water. There is a lot of traffic. There is some milk in the fridge.

Pot folosi there is la trecut?

Da. La trecut, there is devine there was (singular) și there are devine there were (plural): There was a cat in the garden. There were many people at the party.

Care e diferența dintre there is și have?

There is spune că ceva există undeva (There is a bank on this street). Have spune că cineva posedă ceva (I have a car). Nu le confunda: There is a car = există o mașină; I have a car = am o mașină.

Se spune „there are a lot of" sau „there is a lot of"?

Regula strictă: there are a lot of + plural (There are a lot of people) și there is a lot of + nenumărabil (There is a lot of water). În vorbirea de zi cu zi, mulți nativi folosesc there's a lot of pentru ambele.
